Report from Serbia & Italy     June 23 – July 5, 2007

 

Dr. Jonathan Levy and Duncan Macdonald, Esq. visited Serbia and Italy on behalf of Vatican Bank plaintiffs and held meetings with the following:

 

Dushan Zupan and Prof. Dr. Svetozar Stojanovic of the Serbian American Center who put the resources of the Serbian American Center at our disposal and provided invaluable help setting up meetings with members of the government and press.
 
Italian journalist "Le Etleboro" based in Banja Luka who is considered an Italian expert on Balkan politics.
 
Aleksandr Simic - legal advisor to Prime Minister Kostunica.

 

Dorde Mamula, Member of Parliament, Democratic Party of Serbia

Tatana Citic - TV Journalist with Television Belgrade (RTS) conducted an extensive interview on the legal case against the Vatican at the offices of the Serbian American Center.

Slobodan Kljakic of Politika newspaper, also conducted an extensive interview about the legal case at the offices of the Serbian American Center.

We also visited Republic of Serbia Ministry for the Diaspora.


Roma of Serbia - Council of Gypsies – we met with our Roma clients and their Secretary General Solobadan Bojic Bittner and his council.  A press conference followed the meeting at Sava Center which was televised by RTS.  Also at the press conference supporting the case were well known Roma activist Bajram Haliti (President
of the Central Office of the Roma from Kosovo and Metohija) and Slobadan Nikolic.  The Roma pledged to mobilize to support the lawsuit and lobby on its behalf worldwide.

Milojko and Milan Budimir - Milojko is secretary of the Association of the Serbs from Croatia and member of the Serbian Orthodox Church's Jasenovac Committee. Milan is coordinator of the Serbian Democratic Forum.  Both were extremely helpful during my stay in Belgrade and we discussed at length problems of displaced Serbs from Krajina.

Slavka Draskovic, Director Serbian Unity Congress Beograd, a cordial meeting was conducted with our old friends, the Serbian Unity Congress, at their Belgrade office. The Director was briefed on our activities in Serbia.

Republik Srpska Krajina - a full meeting of the cabinet of the RSK (lawsuit plaintff) took place to discuss various matters including the current status of the lawsuit.  Present were RSK Premier, Milorad Buha who is also a Radical Party MP and the RSK Foreign Minister.

Serbian Radical Party (SRS)
The Serbian Radical Party controls a plurality of seats in the Serbian Parliament.  We met several times with SRS Secretary General Alexander Vucic who expressed his support for the lawsuit.  I also met with numerous SRS MPs including Elena Bozic-Talijan, Nemanja Sarovic, Slavko Jerkovic, Amjad Migati, Dejan Mirovic and Lidija Vucicevic who back our efforts against the Vatican and was presented to the SRS Parliamentary group at the Parliament building, spoke at a joint press conference with SRS Secretary General Vucic and Mr. Buha, and addressed 5000 SRS supporters at a conference on the Vatican's role in the destruction of Yugoslavia along with other experts and chaired by Secretary General Vucic.  SRS arranged interviews with Serbian Pravda and Greater Serbia newspapers; the press conference was televised on RTS1 and PINK TV in Belgrade.

 

Italy – A meeting with the press and legal experts was held near Milan including investigative journalist, Ferruccio Pinotti, authors of books on Opus Dei and the notorious Vatican banker, Roberto Calvi.
